WHO PLANTS
ESPIONAGE DEVICES?
There are two categories of professional intelligence gathering. The worst
but least numerous is the hired professional who has been contracted by
a competitor to acquire specific information such as trade secrets, client
list, pricing, key personnel, etc. The second, more common but generally
less dangerous is the spy who is an opportunistic spy. He has planted
devices in hopes of discovering something, anything that will be useful
to a competitor and thus saleable. Who are these guys? Did you ever wonder
what all the retired and dismissed spooks that used to work for various
governments do with themselves? They’re unemployed and they have
been trained to acquire and collect information. Private investigators
are also active in this area.
WHO PLANTS PRIVACY INVASION DEVICES?
This is blackmail, and now there is a new breed of 21st century blackmailer.
They have departed enough from the standard sort that I have given them
a specific name. I call them vampires. I’d guess that these guys
are rogue private investigators retired spooks, and this is their M.O.
according to one who was caught in Michigan but not prosecuted. He said
there were many others like him. They purchase marketing company lead
lists within their desired parameters (for example; married men, homes
worth over $1 million, live in Michigan, business owner or executive).
They plant phone taps, room bugs etc in the victim’s homes, cars
and offices and start recording/monitoring. Sooner or later they get something
juicy, damaging, embarrassing etc. Then they investigate the target’s
finances to determine how much the victim or their company can afford
to pay out on a regular basis without raising red flags with accountants,
spouses etc. The victim then places the vampire on payroll, mailing a
paycheck every payday. Amazingly, the vampire will recalculate the victim’s
financial health annually and raise (and even lower!) the amount due accordingly!
They bleed the victim slowly, thus the term “vampire”.
