Glad you asked!

Incompetence is exposed by testing! Beware of two things though. First, some TSCM firms hate it so much they will refuse your account. I’ll leave it you to guess what that might mean. Secondly don’t ever surprise them. Always tell them you want to conduct a test and be sure the test does not involve an illegal device or use of device.
Here is an easy, legal and practical way to test the competency of an existing in-house team or a subcontracted service. Purchase a cordless true 5.8 GHz, digital, spread spectrum frequency hopping telephone. These are available at any department store and Uniden makes the cheapest. When the team arrives to conduct a sweep show them to the phone and act curious about how their equipment can find RF sources and you would like to see a demonstration. Amateur gear and sweep techs will fail to locate this device every time! That phone is not advanced or crazy stuff; it’s cheap, easily available off-the-shelf technology. If your “professional” sweep team doesn’t have the equipment or expertise to find this, you are in very serious trouble indeed.
If you haven’t yet hired a team but want to use such a test to be sure of their competence, it’s even easier. Just come right out and ask them what equipment they would use that can detect a 5.8 GHz, digital, spread spectrum frequency hopping signal when you interview them for the job. You won’t even have to go through the test to weed out the losers; the question alone will expose them.
