HOW CAN I TELL A PROFESSIONAL FROM AN AMATEUR?

Equipment, training and experience are all critical advantages professionals have over amateurs but while training and experience are easy to lie about, equipment is not. Contact several firms and ask for their equipment list and also ask who owns it. More equipment is better. Higher tech equipment is better. And you want the owner of the equipment, not a monkey who has been taught how to press buttons.

Ask how long they estimate your TSCM inspection will take? It takes at least four man-hours per room to conduct a thorough inspection. Therefore, three offices and a boardroom will take a two man team at least eight hours, a three man team about five hours (depending on the threat level). If they conduct your sweep much faster than this, you’re getting a quickie, not a full inspection.

Are they licensed?

Are they bonded?

Do they carry liability and work comp insurance?

Professionals work out of their offices, amateurs work out of their homes. Do they have any formal training or are they self taught? And please, don’t just ask these questions; require proof prior to hiring a TSCM firm. Many amateurs lie about these things wanting to impress you, hoping you won’t call their bluff. There are many people in this line of work, but very few professionals. Recognize the difference.
